About the album

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ fifth studio album and the point where their funk-punk attack was reshaped into a broader song language. Flea’s bass remains the engine, but the arrangements leave room for melody, vocal harmony, and the tension between quiet verses and physical choruses. “Under the Bridge,” “Give It Away,” “Suck My Kiss,” and “Breaking the Girl” show four ways the band could make groove serve the song. Rick Rubin produced the album at the Mansion in Los Angeles, where the residential setting became part of the recording story. Engineer Brendan O’Brien helped capture the performances, and “Under the Bridge” grew from Anthony Kiedis’s poem about loneliness and recovery into the group’s largest single. Warner Bros. released the record in 1991. The original CD is a seventeen-track program, including the brief “They’re Red Hot,” so its sequencing moves between full songs, interludes, and abrupt shifts.
