About the album

MTV Unplugged in New York presents Nirvana without the usual wall of distortion. Recorded for MTV in November 1993, the set is shaped by unexpected choices: acoustic versions, a David Bowie cover, and a guest appearance by Curt and Cris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets. Scott Litt produced the performance with the band, keeping the room close and the arrangements spare. Cobain’s guitar, Krist Novoselic’s bass, Dave Grohl’s restrained drums, and Pat Smear’s support make the group sound exposed but never empty. The DGC release appeared in 1994 as a fourteen-track CD, ending with “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” rather than an encore.
