About the album
Grace is Jeff Buckley’s only completed studio album, released in 1994 with a voice that can move from a near whisper to a full-throated cry without losing its sense of detail. The record is not organized around one fixed style. “Mojo Pin” and “Grace” use rock arrangements that keep changing shape; “Last Goodbye” places a clean melodic line inside a direct song form; “Lilac Wine” and “Hallelujah” let Buckley’s phrasing carry the drama. His band-Michael Tighe, Mick Grondahl, and Matt Johnson-gives the performances tension without crowding the center. Andy Wallace mixed the album, while Buckley and the band developed the songs through live playing and arrangement changes. The result preserves musicians responding to one another, especially in the rhythm section and in the spaces around the guitar. “Hallelujah” is a Leonard Cohen composition, but Buckley’s reading became the version many later listeners encountered first. Columbia issued Grace in 1994. Its ten-song sequence includes original songs alongside interpretations, and the contrast is deliberate: the album’s identity comes from the way Buckley makes each source sound personally inhabited. Grace was the only studio album released during his lifetime, which gives its unfinished career a particular weight without reducing the music to biography.
