About the album

Ten is Pearl Jam’s debut album, a record of heavy guitars and open emotional space that arrived as Seattle became a national story. Eddie Vedder’s voice gives “Alive,” “Even Flow,” and “Jeremy” their public force, but the album also depends on Mike McCready’s melodic leads, Stone Gossard’s structural riffs, Jeff Ament’s bass movement, and Dave Krusen’s drumming. Pearl Jam recorded it with producer Rick Parashar at London Bridge Studio in Seattle. Many songs began as instrumental demos from Gossard and Ament, with Vedder’s lyrics and melodies added to that foundation. The production keeps a live-band sense of interaction while giving the guitars enough separation to breathe. “Black” and “Release” make the slower side as important as the singles, using repetition and duration rather than forcing every section toward a hook. Epic issued Ten in 1991. The original CD’s eleven-song sequence moves from “Once” through “Release,” making room for grief, anger, and tenderness inside a muscular rock format.
