About the album
Meteora is Linkin Park’s second studio album, built after the pressure of Hybrid Theory without pretending that pressure did not exist. The band keeps its contrast between electronic texture, heavy guitars, rap, and melodic choruses, but the arrangements are more deliberate and the transitions more tightly engineered. “Somewhere I Belong,” “Faint,” “Numb,” and “Breaking the Habit” give the album its public shape, while “Foreword” and “Session” show how much of the record’s identity lives in the spaces between the singles. Linkin Park wrote and developed the material together, then worked with producer Don Gilmore on a process involving extensive demos, editing, and sound design. Mike Shinoda’s programmed elements and Chester Bennington’s vocal shifts are structural parts of the songs, changing the emotional temperature inside a verse or chorus. The title and artwork draw on Greek monastery landscapes, but the music stays focused on the band’s internal machinery: loops, dropped guitars, clipped drums, and choruses that arrive with exact timing. Released in 2003, Meteora followed a debut that had become a major commercial reference point for early-2000s rock. The original CD is a compact thirteen-track program, opening with the brief instrumental “Foreword” and ending with “Numb.”
