About the album
The College Dropout is Kanye West’s debut album, a detailed study of ambition, faith, debt, class, and the pressure to turn a life into a marketable story. West’s production draws on soul samples but leaves space for skits, spoken interruptions, and sharply observed verses. “Through the Wire” was recorded after his jaw was wired shut, a circumstance that became part of the song’s rhythm and the album’s public introduction. Roc-A-Fella released the twenty-one-track album in 2004. Jay-Z, Common, and Syleena Johnson are among the guests, while the sequencing lets “Spaceship,” “Family Business,” and “Jesus Walks” widen the record beyond its singles.
