About the album

2001 is Dr. Dre’s second studio album and a studio-built account of his return to the center of West Coast rap. The production is controlled and spacious: low bass, crisp drums, synthesizer lines, and vocal arrangements leave each guest a defined role. Eminem appears on “Forgot About Dre,” Snoop Dogg on “The Next Episode,” and Xzibit and Nate Dogg add to the record’s shifting voices. Dre’s post-N.W.A. history is part of the context, but the album is most clear as a working method, with Dre and a team of co-producers refining small changes until the groove feels inevitable. Aftermath issued the twenty-two-track CD in 1999. It is a long programme with skits, transitions, and several producers, but the sonic palette stays recognizably connected from beginning to end.
