About the album
For Emma, Forever Ago is Bon Iver’s debut album, a small set of songs whose distance from ordinary band production became part of its sound. Justin Vernon recorded much of the material in a Wisconsin cabin during a period of isolation, layering voice, guitar, horns, and processed textures into arrangements that feel close to the weather outside. “Skinny Love,” “Flume,” and “Re: Stacks” are spare without being empty; the stacked vocals make a single performance seem to occupy several rooms at once. Jagjaguwar released the nine-track album in 2008. Its physical identity is compact and its writing is direct, but the recording process gives each quiet detail unusual weight. The record sits at the beginning of Bon Iver’s run, before the larger ensembles and more elaborate studio architecture of later releases.
